The Shoebox Project for Women at The Fall Womens Show

A simple shoebox can hold much more than everyday items. It can carry warmth, encouragement and a reminder that someone in the community cares.

This year, The Fall Women’s Show is proud to welcome The Shoebox Project for Women, Nova Scotia as part of our community spotlight. This Canadian charity supports women who are experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness by sharing thoughtfully prepared Shoebox gifts filled with essentials, comforts and small luxuries.

The Nova Scotia team has set a meaningful goal this year: to deliver 1,000 Shoeboxes to women across the province. At the show, guests will have the chance to learn more, write a personal note and discover simple ways to help spread kindness.

What The Shoebox Project for Women does

The Shoebox Project for Women helps bring comfort and dignity to women facing difficult circumstances. Each Shoebox gift includes a mix of practical items and thoughtful treats. The idea is simple, but powerful. A gift can meet immediate needs while also sending a clear message: you are seen, valued and supported.

Shoeboxes often include items such as:

  • Personal care products

  • Cozy socks or winter accessories

  • Notebooks, pens or journals

  • Small treats

  • Gift cards, where accepted

  • A handwritten note of encouragement

The exact needs can vary by community and by local partner agencies. That is why learning from the Nova Scotia team is such a valuable part of the show. They can share what is most helpful, how donations are collected and how completed Shoeboxes reach women across the province.

For many women, the note tucked inside the box can mean as much as the items themselves. A few kind words, written by someone they may never meet, can offer a moment of connection at a time when life feels isolating.

Why the Nova Scotia goal matters

The goal to deliver 1,000 Shoeboxes across Nova Scotia is both ambitious and deeply local. It reflects a real need in communities throughout the province, from larger urban centres to smaller towns where support can be harder to access.

Homelessness and housing insecurity can affect women in many ways. Some may be staying in shelters. Some may be couch-surfing, living in unsafe housing or facing a sudden crisis. Many carry responsibilities, stress and uncertainty that are not always visible.

A Shoebox gift does not solve housing insecurity. It does something different, and still important. It offers comfort, choice and care. It reminds someone that her community has not forgotten her.

A few thoughtful words can make a gift feel personal.

The Shoebox Project also gives community members a clear and practical way to help. Not everyone knows where to start when they want to support women experiencing homelessness. This project makes that first step feel possible. People can donate items, assemble gifts, write notes or volunteer time.

Small actions add up. One person may bring a few products. Another may help pack boxes. Someone else may write a message that brings comfort on a hard day. Together, those acts help the Nova Scotia team move closer to their goal.

What to do at their table at the show

The Shoebox Project for Women, Nova Scotia will be at The Fall Women’s Show on Saturday, September 26, from 10 AM to 5 PM at Cedar Event Centre in Clayton Park.

Their table will be a welcoming place to pause, ask questions and take part in the project. Guests can stop by to:

Writing a note is one of the easiest ways to take part during the show. It does not need to be long or perfect. A warm, sincere message is enough.

A helpful note might say:

You are valued. You are not alone. Someone in your community is thinking of you and wishing you comfort, strength and kindness today.

Messages like this are simple, but they can feel deeply human. They help turn a Shoebox from a collection of useful items into a personal gift.
